1956 - 1957

We first met at a New Years Eve Dance in Woolton. The year was 1955, and we made a date for January 1st 1956. Quite some time ago, but I still remember the way she laughed when I proposed to her. I was a young soldier on a weekend pass, and on January 2nd, off I went to the Small Arms School of infantry in Hythe, Kent, before returning 3 months later to my unit in Luneberg, Germany. My best friend was an N.C.O. in charge of leave allocation, so I returned to Liverpool quite a lot over the following 12 months until on January 1st, 1957 I was demobbed. On February 27th of that year I fulfilled the dream and we were married in St Mary’s Church, Woolton. Let the fun and laughter begin. When I was young I laughed a lot and thought that life was grand But most of all I loved the girl who offered me her hand Her nose turned up and her toes turned up And my heart was filled with pride When I took my place at the altar and turned to face my bride When our children came we loved them for they filled our lives with fun But all too soon it was their turn and they left us one by one
